Personal Time Management

Do you struggle to find time for all the things you want to do? Are you struggling to cope with the demands of your job? Do you find that you don't have time for the things that matter to you?

Hopefully, this isn't you but unfortunately most of us feel this way some time. You may be under stress because you are not achieving enough in your professional life. Or you feel bad because you are missing out on important occasions with family and friends.

Do not fret, your worries could soon be over. These time worries are fixable, and it is not as difficult to your think. It only takes a few small adjustments in the way you use your time to change your life forever. This is not only about managing your time effectively, it can change your life fundamentally and for the better.

Personal time management - Manage yourself

There are 24 hours in the day. That is not going to change so we are going to have to accept it. Time can not be changed, but the way you approach it can. This is where the answer to effective time management lies. You must train yourself to focus on the things that really matter to you and spend your time on these things only. Everything else is just a waste of time.

Making the changes necessary to manage your time effectively can be rewarding and fun, but some of these changes will take a leap of faith on your part. However, there is no need to rush, you can make the necessary changes at your own pace. Trying to make big changes at the beginning might be too much for you, so start with small steps.

Personal time management - Know yourself

Knowing yourself is the essential first step on the road to effective time management. In modern society there are so many distractions we can easily lose our focus on what we really want in our lives. For most people, this is an unfortunate fact of life.

So this is the first step in effective time management - finding out what you really want from life. This is where you find your vision. Try to remember yourself as a child or as a young adult when you felt you could achieve anything. What were your dreams and aims when you were that age? Your dreams and goals at this time may help you get in touch with your vision.  No doubt, some priorities will have changed, but many will have remained the same.

You should also think about how you would like your life to be both in terms of your professional life and your personal life. Also consider your potential and what you think you can really achieve in life. This is your vision.

 Where are you now?

By now, you should have a reasonable idea of what you would like your life to be like. So here comes the tough part. You must take your vision and compare it to your life at present. If you are writing all of this down, the difference between the two probably will not make for very pleasant reading.

However, no matter how wide the gap is between your ideal reality and how you live your life now, it can be bridged. You may think of effective time management as a tool that will help you to get you to meetings on time. This is not the case. Effective time management goes much deeper than that and can make major changes to the way you live your life.

Achieving your ideal reality will involve little changes and big changes in your life. For example, watching less television, that is a little change. A major change could be quitting your job to travel the world. There is a big difference between the two, but both goals are attainable. You need to look at how you spend your days and plan your time with a view to achieving these goals.

 Planning your day.

So have a think about your goals and as an experiment pick two that you want to achieve, one small and one big. Once you have chosen, you should decide on one small step you can take towards achieving each of these tomorrow. If you can do this successfully and complete the step you are on the road to success.

In truth, this is just a first step on a long journey but the point is to show that effective time management and achieving your ideal life can be achieved and the process can be rewarding. Now you need to make sure that everything you do each day is taking you towards your goals, and that you plan in such a way that you complete all of the tasks you need to do each day.

This is why you need a clear time plan for every day. Each day, you will need to have a clear idea of what needs doing and find a suitable place for it on your schedule. At the beginning it can be difficult to know how long each task will take so it may be a good idea to keep a time log for a week before starting to keep a time plan. With a time log you write down in detail how you spend your time. Keeping a time log for a week should give you a clear picture of how long the various tasks you need to do take. When you know this you can plan your days much more accurately and effectively.

 Time wasters

And let's not forget time wasters. Time wasters can destroy any attempt at effective time management if they are not identified and eliminated. They can be the most trivial of things, and are therefore very hard to spot.

Examples of common time wasters are :

 * Lack of or poor planning - File things properly, write down appointments, that kind of thing. Basically, you need to be organized to use your time effectively.

 * Procrastination - Some things need to be done now. Don't get into the habit of putting things off unnecessarily.

 * Not delegating - You can't do it all yourself. Do the things that you are good at and enjoy. Someone else can do the rest.

 * Interruptions - Don't let clutter and noise eat into your productive time. Make sure there are no interruptions when you want to work.

Try to identify the time wasters that are holding you back and eliminate them from your life.

These are just some of the basics of effective time management. If you take this process in small steps it will be much easier to incorporate the necessary changes into your life. As you continue on the journey to effective time management you will find yourself more fulfilled and with more time on your hands for the things that matter to you.
