Do you ever end your days feeling like you just haven't achieved enough? Is your leisure and family time taking a back seat to your professional life? If you could really choose how to spend your time, how would you spend it?

If you do it is okay as most of us feel like this on a regular basis. It could be that the pressures of your professional life are getting you down. Or you feel bad because you are missing out on important occasions with family and friends.

Do not fret, your worries could soon be over. These time worries are fixable, and it is not as difficult to your think. Simply by changing the way you approach the use of your time you can find the hours to do all the things you want to, and even have some time left over. As well as finding more time for the things you want to do, you will also be more fulfilled in your life.

Time management tips:  Manage yourself

Each day has only 24 hours. This is something that will not change and we can do nothing about it. While you may not be able to control this, you can manage yourself. Once you realize this you have taken the first step towards effective time management. You have to identify the things in life that truly matter to you - this is where you should spend your time. Everything else is just a waste of time.

It is important to point out at this stage that making the changes necessary to manage your time effectively can mean making some fundamental changes in your lifestyle. For this reason it is important to take it at your own pace and make one change at a time. Trying to make big changes at the beginning might be too much for you, so start with small steps.

Time management tips:  Understand yourself

To take the first step in effective time management you need to know yourself. In modern society there are so many distractions we can easily lose our focus on what we really want in our lives. It is difficult to identify where and when this happens, but it inevitably does.

So this is the first step in effective time management - finding out what you really want from life. When you discover this you have discovered your vision. Cast yourself back to when you were an adolescent or a young adult, a time when anything seemed possible. How did your dream life look then, what did you really want in your heart? This could help you to get in touch with your vision. Your vision now may not exactly match what you wanted then, but it will probably be close.

Also ask yourself how you would like your personal and professional life to be. You should also think about your capabilities and what is possible for you in life. This is your vision.

 Where are you now?

If you followed the steps above you should be able to picture your ideal life accurately. Now comes the scary part. I want you to compare this vision of your ideal life to your life as it really is now. Be prepared for a shock here as there will most likely be a vast difference between the two.

However, no matter how wide the gap is between your ideal reality and how you live your life now, it can be bridged. You may think of effective time management as a tool that will help you to get you to meetings on time. This is not the case. Effective time management is much more about you and how you choose to spend your time.

Achieving your ideal reality will involve little changes and big changes in your life. A small change would be something like taking a walk every evening. Quitting your job and starting a business, that is a big change. However, both are achievable with the right approach. You need to examine how you spend your time each day and make the necessary changes to achieve your goals.

 Planning your day.

So have a think about your goals and as an experiment pick two that you want to achieve, one small and one big. Once you have chosen, you should decide on one small step you can take towards achieving each of these tomorrow. If you can complete the one step towards achieving each goal then you have made an excellent start.

In truth, there is much more to it than this but this will show you that it is far from impossible and can be very rewarding. However, doing this effectively requires a lot of planning so that you complete all of the tasks you need to do each day while ensuring that all of these tasks are in line with your vision.

So for every day you need a clear plan, a time plan. Each day, you will need to have a clear idea of what needs doing and find a suitable place for it on your schedule. At the beginning it can be difficult to know how long each task will take so it may be a good idea to keep a time log for a week before starting to keep a time plan. A time log is a detailed record of how you spend your time each day. Do this for a few days and you will get a clear idea of how you spend your days and how long various tasks take you. When you know how long each task will take, you can plan your day much more accurately.

 Time wasters

And finally a quick word on time wasters. Time wasters can destroy any attempt at effective time management if they are not identified and eliminated. This is mainly because they can be very hard to spot and are often the most trivial things.

Here are just a few time wasters:

 * Lack of planning or bad planning - Develop a good filing system and know how you are going to spend your days. Being neat in your habits will help you manage your time more effectively.

 * Procrastination - If you keep putting things off you will miss all the best opportunities in life.

 * Not delegating - No one person can be good at everything. You need to delegate tasks that eat into your time unnecessarily to other people.

 * Interruptions - Set up your workspace so that there are no distractions that will disrupt your workflow.

These are just a few of the time wasters that could be affecting your effective time management.

This was a crash course in time management but should get you started. If you take this process in small steps it will be much easier to incorporate the necessary changes into your life. As you continue to take more steps you will move closer and closer to your goals and find yourself with all the time you need for the things you want to do.
